Follow processing and retry

See where a video is in processing, read its processing log, and retry a video that failed.

After a file is uploaded, the server converts it for streaming and stores it on Sia. Follow that work from the Studio, read the log of each run, and restart a video whose processing failed.

The four steps

Every video goes through the same four steps. The Studio draws them as a progress bar with these names:

StepWhat happens
UploadThe file is sent to this server and resumes if interrupted
TranscodeConverted into several qualities for streaming
Store on SiaVideo, playlists and thumbnails are stored on Sia
PublishThe video becomes playable

For what happens inside each step, see the upload pipeline.

While a video processes, the Studio names its current stage and a percentage, for example "Storing on Sia, 72%". The stage names are:

StageMeaning
Waiting to startThe file has arrived and processing has not started yet.
TranscodingThe server converts the video into several qualities.
Storing on SiaThe server stores the converted files on Sia. A second line "Waiting for the Sia uploader" means transcoding is done and storing has not started yet.
PublishingThe server makes the video playable.
DoneProcessing finished. The video is ready to play.
FailedProcessing stopped with an error. See When processing fails.

When a step fails, the server tries it again by itself, unless the file is not a readable video. The stage then reads, for example, "Transcoding, trying again".

Video statuses

Each video has one status. It shows as a badge next to the title on the video page and on each video on the Videos page.

StatusMeaning
Waiting for fileThe video was created and no file has arrived yet.
UploadingThe file is arriving.
ProcessingThe file has arrived and is being processed. In the video list the badge names the stage instead, for example Storing on Sia.
ReadyThe video plays, and its links and embed code work.
FailedProcessing stopped with an error.
InterruptedThe video was created more than 10 minutes ago and its file has not fully arrived. See When an upload is interrupted.

Where to follow progress

  • Upload page: each row you started in this browser shows the stage and a progress bar. Click Details on the row to see the processing log.
  • Top bar: while uploads run, a progress ring shows in the top bar. Click it for the Uploads list.
  • Videos page: a processing video shows its stage and percentage in the list.
  • Video page: until the video is ready, the player area shows the four steps. It reads Uploading while the file arrives, then Processing with the stage and the percentage. The page updates by itself.

When a video you uploaded in this tab finishes, a notice "“Title” is ready" appears on any other Studio page. On the upload page, the row itself turns into a check mark and a link.

Read the processing log

Open the video from Videos.
Click the Activity tab under the player.

The tab shows when the run started and finished, how many times it was tried again ("Tried again 2 times"), and the processing log: one line per event, with the time, the stage and a message. If the run failed, the line it failed on is red.

Before the whole file has arrived, the tab says "Nothing has run yet. Processing starts once the whole file has arrived."

When processing fails

A failed video shows Processing failed in the player area, with one sentence about what went wrong:

  • The file is not a readable video.
  • The original file is no longer on the server.
  • Transcoding the video failed.
  • Storing the video on Sia failed. Retrying usually works.
  • Publishing the video failed. Retrying usually works.
  • Processing stopped with an error.
  • Processing failed before it recorded a reason.

Click Details under the message to see the server's own error text.

The card offers one of two actions next to Delete video:

  • Retry processing when a new run can help.
  • Upload a different file when it cannot, for example when the file is not a readable video. This opens the upload page.

Retry processing

Find the failed video. On the Videos page, failed videos show the reason in red and a Retry button. On the video page, the button reads Retry processing.

Click Retry or Retry processing.

The server starts a new run from Transcoding, or from Storing on Sia when transcoding already finished in an earlier run. The Studio confirms with a notice such as "Processing restarted from Storing on Sia". The video's status returns to Processing, and you follow it as before.

If the retry is refused, the notice starts with "Could not retry" and gives the reason.

On the upload page, a row whose processing failed also has Retry processing or Upload a different file.

When an upload is interrupted

If a video was created more than 10 minutes ago, its file has not fully arrived, and this browser is not sending it, the Studio marks it Interrupted. The video page shows Upload interrupted: "The browser sending this file stopped. Add the same file again in that browser to continue, or delete this video. Unfinished uploads are removed after 24 hours."

To continue it, see Continue an upload after closing the tab. To remove it, click Delete video.

When the Studio cannot read the status

If the Studio cannot reach the server to read the processing status, the player area says "Could not read the processing status." and offers Check again. Processing on the server continues meanwhile.

On the upload page, if processing has not started a minute after the file was sent, the row says "Processing has not started after a minute. Check again, or open the video." with Check again and Open video buttons.
