Upload a video

Add video files in the Studio, give each a title, choose who can watch, and pause, resume or cancel the upload.

Upload one or more video files from your computer. Each file gets a title and a public or private setting, then the Studio sends it to your server, which converts it for streaming and stores it on Sia.

Upload a file

Click Upload video at the top of the sidebar, or press U on any Studio page. The Upload videos page opens.

Drag files onto the box that reads Drop video files here, or click Choose files. You can add several files at once.

For each file, check the Title. The Studio fills it in from the file name, for example product_walkthrough-v2.mov becomes "product walkthrough v2". Add a Description if you like.

Under Who can watch, pick Public ("Anyone with the link or embed") or Private ("Only with signed links"). Each new file starts with the choice you made last. See Choose who can watch for what each means.

Click Start upload, or press Enter in the title field. With several files waiting, a second button starts them all, for example Upload 3 videos.

You can also drop files anywhere on the Videos page. They open on the upload page, ready for a title.

The U shortcut does not fire while you type in a field or while a menu or dialog is open. Adding ?upload=1 to any Studio address, for example https://sluby.example.com/studio?upload=1, also opens the upload page.

Accepted files and limits

  • File types: the drop box lists MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WebM and AVI. Files that are not videos are skipped with a message such as "notes.txt is not a video file."
  • Size: the drop box shows the server's limit, for example "up to 10.7 GB each". A file over the limit shows "Too large for this server." in the list and a line such as "11.8 GB is over this server's 10.7 GB limit." under its title, and Start upload stays disabled. The person who runs the server sets this limit (MAX_UPLOAD_SIZE).
  • Empty files are skipped: "clip.mp4 is empty and was skipped."
  • Title: required, up to 200 characters. An empty title shows "Enter a title."
  • Description: optional, up to 5,000 characters. A counter appears near the limit.

If you add a file you already uploaded from this browser, the form says "You uploaded this file 2 days ago as “Title”." with an Open video link, so you can avoid a duplicate.

Follow the upload

Files you add and uploads you start appear in the Files list on the upload page. A summary above the list counts them, for example "1 uploading · 2 queued · 1 done".

While a file is sending, its row shows a progress bar and a line like "5.4 of 12 MB · 220 KB/s · about 30 s left". Once the whole file is sent, the row reads "File sent. Waiting for the server to confirm." Processing starts after that. To follow processing, see Follow processing and retry.

When a video is ready, its row turns into one line with a check mark, the title as a link to the video, and Copy embed code. If you are on another Studio page, a notice "“Title” is ready" appears with a Copy embed code button.

Uploads keep going while you use the Studio

You can leave the upload page and keep working: uploads continue on every other Studio page. While uploads run, a progress ring shows in the top bar. Click it to see the Uploads list, and click Open uploads to return to the upload page.

Closing the browser tab stops the upload. While an upload is sending, the browser asks you to confirm before the tab closes.

One file at a time

The Studio sends one file at a time. Files you start while another is sending wait in the list as Queued, 2nd, Queued, 3rd and so on, with a line such as "Starts when Intro finishes." To take a file out of the queue, click the close button on its row.

Pause, resume and cancel

  • Pause stops sending and keeps what was sent. The row shows "Paused" and how much is sent, for example "40% · 4.8 of 12 MB sent".
  • Resume continues from where the file stopped.
  • Cancel stops the upload and removes what was sent. The row says "Upload canceled. Nothing was kept."

If the server does not confirm the cancel, the row reads "Upload stopped but not cleaned up." with a Try again button.

When the connection drops

If your connection drops, the row shows Offline and "The connection dropped. The upload continues when you are back online." The upload continues by itself once you are back online.

If the upload fails for another reason, the row shows Failed, the reason, and Resume upload when the file can continue. Files queued behind it wait: a Queue paused notice offers Skip to next to move on without it.

Continue an upload after closing the tab

If the tab closed or the browser quit partway through an upload, you can continue it from the same browser.

Open the upload page. A section Unfinished from earlier lists each upload that stopped partway, with how much was sent and when it started.

Click Choose file on the row and pick the same file, or add the same file to the drop box. The upload continues from where it stopped, with the title and settings you gave it.

If you pick a different file, the row says "This is not the same file." and names the file it expects.

Continue within 24 hours of starting the upload. After that the server removes the partial file, and the same file starts over as a new upload.

To discard an unfinished upload, click Delete on its row and confirm. The server deletes the part already sent and the video entry.

Uploads in another tab

A file already uploading in another tab of the same browser cannot be added again: the page says "This file is already uploading in another tab." Those uploads show under Uploading in another tab. Manage them in the tab that sends them.
